Traffic is essential to any retail site. But do you know where your traffic is coming from? Do you know who is visiting your site? Knowing your website visitor is knowing your customer. So find out a little about your website visitors. The easiest way to go about this is Google Analytics. Visit Google Analytics and take the tour. Sign up and get the code and paste it into your website. There are some tutorials to this on the Google Analytics site, I believe, depending on what host you have etc., or you can find help with this online.
Once you’ve installed this code you will be able to track your visitors in many different ways, by daily visits, bounce rates, pages, keywords they’ve used to find your site. The data is invaluable to understanding your site visits. I often hear people ask why they aren’t getting enough traffic or why people aren’t buying and that’s where Google Analytics comes into play. You can analyze where people are going on your site and how much time they are spending there. This information allows you to tweak your site based on that information. For example, if you have a site and you sell beach gear and your analytics show that most of the visitors are viewing your surfboard page, and they are finding your site by typing in the word surfboard but that page only has one surfboard on it, then maybe you should focus on that page a little more.
It’s a fabulous tool and most importantly it’s free.
What tools do you use to track visitors on your website?

Great info! I wasn’t aware Google Analytics was free. I’ve been using Statcounter but may give Google a try, it sound a bit more in depth.
