Responsible for weekly coverage of news in the Sun, the largest circulated newspaper in Santa Barbara County. In this position I currently manage a staff of four and coordinate freelance writers and columnists, as well as oversee production. I am responsible for staff and freelance budgets, and hiring and training editorial employees. I also prepare and deliver speeches to community groups and nonprofits on how to develop media outreach and foster working relationships with the media. I have won several 1st and 2nd place awards from the California Newspaper Publishers Association and the National Newspaper Association for my feature stories and humor column.

Copywriting and marketing

Self-employed copywriting and marketing specialist, 2007-Present

I provide press release writing and distribution, website copy writing, social media outreach management and website content for small to mid-sized companies. Other duties include development of public relations strategies, coordinating news briefings and press tours, writing brochures, newsletters, and educational materials. As part of community outreach I am responsible for taking photographing events and products, photo editing and coordinating images for posting on social media. Media outreach, responsibilities include maintaining a media contact list, developing and distributing press kits, and developing working relationships with the media. Regular tasks also involve developing multimedia productions including slide shows, video projects, PowerPoint presentations and website content. Clients have included Santa Barbara-based Maps.com, Nipomo Adobe, and the Santa Maria Fairpark.

Reporter/Managing editor

Pulitzer Central Coast Publishing, Santa Maria, CA 93455 1990-2005

For the Pulitzer Central Coast Publishing chain of newspapers I held several positions of increasing responsibility beginning as a reporter for the Santa Maria Times in Santa Maria, where I produced lifestyle features and covered city government. At the Lompoc Record I was city editor where I supervised a staff of 10 and coordinated news coverage. I also was responsible for layout and design of the front page. At the Santa Ynez Valley News in Solvang I was managing editor where I helped bring the newly acquired community newspaper to the level of other newspapers in the chain. Assisted with redesign, planned the paper’s new direction, and supervised a staff as well as freelancers.
