My name is Shelly Cone and I’ve been a storyteller since as long as I can remember. My skill at telling my parents tall tales as a kid and imaginative stories as a teen eventually came in handy as I followed a career path in journalism. I fell in love with telling news stories while working on my school paper in high school. A fortunate internship at the local newspaper my senior year of high school led to a job as a junior reporter and I never considered another career after that.
Fast forward 20+ years and I’ve gained an excellent journalism education at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, all the while working for various newspapers and magazines. As a reporter I’ve covered government and politics, on the local, county and state levels, and I’ve even covered presidential campaign stops. In that capacity I’ve also worked on the school, cops, courts and lifestyle beats.
I’ve been an editor and managing editor for several local newspapers managing a redesign and supervising a team of reporters, photographers and editors.
Most recently I’ve delved into multimedia reporting and also launched my own hyperlocal digital lifestyle magazine called The Salt, focusing on the Central Coast lifestyle.
